The Güvem - Beşkonak area bearing fish and leaf fossils and the Pelitçik - Yahşihan petrified (silicified) forest are ideal geopark areas for both their scientific importance and fossil richness. Both of the areas were officially registered as “Natural Site” by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. A geopark is an area in which highly scientific important geologic objects are situated as a whole. Its basic mission is to preserve and research the geosites at the risk of being destroyed. Because the education and introduction is the one of the ways of preservation, the geoparks are research centers with a legal geotourism management and the areas open to visit. The preservation laws in Turkey define the national parks, natural monuments, natural park and natural preservation areas. The “geopark” term does not exist in this definition. However the geopark is a natural preservation and geotourism instrument which becomes widespread rapidly. Because the geopark is an advertisement instrument, a symbol of cultural development and sensitivity to the nature, and an instrument of earn money from nature by preserving it. So it is a source of proud and credit. For this reason, it is expected to be making its law.
It is trying to create the infrastructure of two geoparks (Güvem Geopark, Kızılcahamam and Pelitçik-Yahşihan Geopark, Çamlıdere). These will be pioneers of the geopark applications in Turkey. Geoparks have role of natural preservation and geotourism but education and research missions, which are as important as the first one. So it is needed to a law base and financial power to allow employing experts. The Güvem Geopark and the Pelitçik-Yahşihan Geopark may take on some important missions.
